I was plowing snow this morning when i wen to go in reverse nothing happened.
I lost every gear except 5. I limped the cat back to the house in 5 gear.
I removed the transmission cover and the bottmo shaft looked as if it had broken come out or????.
My question is,do i have to pull the motor, clutch and all the rest of the crap to get to gears ( shaft out)or can i lift it out the top of the case.My book shows the gears being lifted out of the case.It however don't say whether the motor has to be removed.
My quess would be a bad bearing on the cluster gear shaft? Any input would be ever so appreciated.
THANKS IN ADVANCE. ONE SAD LITTLE CAMPER . COMPRESSOR. ser 5u10850

Yes, you have a pretty big job ahead of you.
The clutch shaft has to come out (requires engine removal)
The pinion shaft and gears come out the top of the case. (after removing everything above it)
The lower gears come out the top of the case after the shaft is pulled out through the bevel gear case.
Hope you have a heated shop....know what you'll be doing this winter:)

Thanks O-Mag for the info.
Somehow I knew the engine would have to come out.I wonder what that thing will weight with a 44 unit on the front ?
Good thing there is about 3 feet of snow out there and no shop.I guess I will have to be constructive with a tarp or? There is no way i will wait for spring.Without that cat, I'll go nuts.
Wonder if any one out there has one of those bottom transmission shafts.
I have a parts machine, but the thought of having to pull that engine too makes me sick.
THANKS AGAIN COMPRESSOR

If you don't have a crane, the job can still be done, undo the equalizer spring nuts and jack up the front high enough to take the spring out, let the engine down until it is level, block back and front, remove the dash, undo the fenders from the flywheel housing, take out the bell housing bolts and pull the back-end away with another tractor or pick-up.

CATSILVER,
Sounds like you've been there done that.
What i was thinking was to make some sort of a lift.My problem is i'm not quite sure how much the engine weighs complete with radiator and 44 unit, and also how big of an I beam i would need to span approx 8'
Any idea's??

Hello Compressor,
What is the Serial No of your ailing "D2" ??, because if it has a Serial No after 5U 13237 the tractors were 6 1/8th " longer overall, and the reason for that was to enable the master clutch to be removed etc WITHOUT moving the engine at all. They have a 6" removable coupling between the clutch and the front of the transmission. another way to recognise these tractors is both the high operators seat and also curved (not straight) steering clutch levers.
Hope that this may save you a lot of unessacary work. For what it's worth.
Sincere regards
