This past weekend I made my trip down to New Mexico to get my Side boom/Pipe layer D4. It was better than pictures could show. I was shocked when I flipped the cover back on the hour meter and saw 245 hrs. I was also pleasantly surprised to see Caterpillar tags, even a serial number tag on the pipe layer attachment. A little bit of research showed that Trackson was the originator of this attachment called "PD4". In December of 1951 Caterpillar bought out Trackson. Caterpillar only made 93 of the PD4 attachments and was given the 38C serial number prefix. With the help of Kent Bates we were bale to track down a build date of Dec. 1954 for the PD4 attachment and a build date of May 1955 for the 5 roller 7U D4 that carries it. Thanks to Erik Christenbury for posting the craigslist sale list in late December and thanks to a couple of influential friends pushing me to get this bought up!

Once I got it home, I brought it in the shop to service it completely and check freeze point and PH in the cooling system. Once that was done I installed the boom and started moving some items and cleaning the yard up a bit.

Enjoy!

Hey WyoCat,

As you already know I was hot after that boom. All I can say is "You Suck". Hahahaha.... Good job... You'll use it a lot more than I would. Glad to see it end up in a nice spot. Yes, it's a keeper.

Looks real good Chad I am glad you have made it a great home.

I am sure you will find many uses for the side boom, from moving cats, servicing the 4x4 and even cleaning dear!

Good for you Chad. I know you would like my D4D swing crane but the side boom will work nicely until you acquire another.

Cat, Man, and location. Great job Chad. Do you have any DOT hassle with your Pickup/trailer setup?

Chad was both my classmate (F,P,and E) and one of my Engines instructors while I was at Wyo-Tech in the winter of '98.

Very nice, can't believe the low hours, you really scored there.

What does that rig weigh with the counterbalance weights and boom on board?

Congrats on the nice find.
Can't think of anyone who can use a machine like that any more than you Chad. Perfect machine for your operation. And you can even hire out to a "Pipeline Co" !!!! Bill Walter

Is that not a little to new for you Chad? I'm not so fussy on age of my machines. Maybe I better come get it before to many people see you with it. Man, It does look nice, and appears to work well also. Good Job.
