Hello, I found a few posts about installing a belt on a D2 , but none of them answered my question.
From looking at manuals, diagrams, etc I have an "idea" of how it might work, but dont want to force it and break something (else).

do I need to remove the radiator?

do I only need to unscrew the "collar" ( after removing the set screw on the collar) ?

my fan pulley on both D2's I have has a chunk broken out of them, I suspect from some one doing it wrong

Thanks for any help on this simple matter. ha ha

Here's another idea, you wouldn't have to take anything apart to install. I know it's not original Cat but I've used these on various machines over the years, they hold up well http://www.fennerdrives.com/powertwist-plus/

Wow, great timing, this is an issue I am just having to face on my D2. I shredded the fan belt this weekend plowing snow. My change out is going to be more complicated because I have the hydraulic pump drive to deal with in order to get a new belt in place... unless I can use the belt set-up Ol Grump just sent us the link to. I will be checking that out...

yes that power twist looks like a neat product. I only found applications for smaller belts ( about 1\2 " wide)

my belt is 15/16 wide at the top.

Still would like info on how to install the original product if anyone can share.

Thanks for the response

Greg, if you have the Cat 44 pump, you do not need to remove the pump or the drive shaft, just take the drive flange loose, slide it forward out of the way, and slip the belt behind the end of the shaft. I just did this last July with no problems. I did fit a new flange gasket.

Stephen, thanks for the tip!

What fan belt did you use? (assuming buying one from Cat would be the most expensive option out there!)?

Greg, I did use the Cat belt! I didn't have to worry with "should fit" and I had it in my parts storage long enough to get over any $ hurt feelings, if indeed there were any to begin with. I think having the Caterpillar name & part number showing when the engine is at rest adds to the visual appeal. Better than Napa, Car-Quest, Browning, OpiBelt, etc.
I should add that there is no "just slip the flange forward" my version has a bolt from the side that restrains the end of the shaft, so that must be removed or backed off sufficiently. The flange bolt circle has two threaded holes for extracting the flange from the pulley recess, which may be in a semi frozen condition due to being away from the factory for so long. Remove the bolts, six at least, then screw two of them into the extracting holes and tighten alternately. I did it with the 2S blade attached standing on my head. Use eye protection. You will need a gasket scraper, and a gasket, or the means to make one. Anti-seize is your friend.

well, I will answer my own question, others can chime in if there is a better way.

remove the set screw behind the fan. the collar it came out of SHOULD unscrew, conventional threads
mine took a lot of lubrication and taps with a drift. then, holding the fan with vice grips I grabbed the collar witha big pair of channel locks. working it back and forth got the collar loose, which widens the gap between the pulley.

In may case the collar was chipped ( im going to replace it) so I removed the radiator ( from the bottom mounts). I found the "cap" over the end of the water pump / fan shaft slips on - so I kind of unscrewed it with vice grips. there is then a pin in the water pump shaft that is holding the fan in place. drive that pin out and you can pull off the fan.

I will be researching " water pump rebuild" before I put all this back together !
