I hear more and more about shipping through Fastenal, mostly from car guys shipping tin. Seems to be a good alternative. Also see some stuff shipped through Grayhound at much cheaper rates than common carriers although it is a bit more hassle.
Seem to be easy to work with, only issue I ran into was they have no forklift, so unloading a pallet with parts from my pickup truck for them to ship was not the best.
Fastenal will not ship into CA. They don't have enough freight leaving CA to justify bringing trucks into the state. I had a D-8 tilt cylinder (apx 600 lbs) shipped from upstate NY to Chad's in Laramie WY for a very reasonable cost. It arrived in time for Chad to bring it along for the Santa Margarita show last Memorial Day. As long as it fits on a pallet and strapped down, they will haul.
Are we talking about the Winona Fastenal? Or is it someone else?
The Nation wide chain of stores that sell fasteners and industrial supplies.
