I will be working on this tractor soon as a "retirement " project. I'm told it is a 1942 D2 however I thought I'd check with the experts. The serial number is 5T5090W. Thank you in advance! Looking forward to this new adventure.

5T is not a valid model number--if it is a 5J5090 it would be a 1941 year

More likely to be the D4 5T as the D2 had 5J (wide gauge) and 3J (narrow gauge) serial numbers whereas the D4s of the era had one set of serial numbers with wide gauge models having a suffix W as in your number, 5T5090W.
An easy way to tell the D2 from the D4 is to look at the track frames. On the D4 they are pivoted from the rear sprocket hub whereas on the D2 they are pivoted on a cross shaft in front of the rear sprockets.

Enjoy your new adventure !!

You have an HT4, which is a loader based on the D4 tractor

Thank you very much! I will be posting here periodically as work is being done to wake this machine up from a long sleep. I'm sure we will have a gazillion questions as we dig into this project.

Not an HT4, but the forerunner, a cable operated Trackson shovel mounted on a 5T series D4 tractor.

Is there a way to find what year this machine was made from the serial number? Maybe a better question would be is there a chart that breaks down the serial number?

Thank you in advance!

Alan, you've come to the right place for help restoring your unit. Lots of deep experience from past and current Cat employees and general enthusiasts that have been there, done that. No question is silly (although you are highly encouraged to use the forum's search feature ; ). Thanks to catsilver for correcting the info on the loader - that's the type of knowledge that you'll find here.
Regarding the age, ACMOC have a serial # booklet available, someone on here will know what year yours is, and also Erik has an owner's registry at http://www.chriscomachinery.com/D4serial.htm Send "chriscokid" a private message with your details and he'll add it to the registry. Yours is 1946 per Erik's registry
