I devised this puller to (possibly) pull out the steering clutch pins on my D6. I hope it works. These pins in the bell cranks are frozen solid, i can't get the bell cranks to move at all.

Fingers crossed that this will work. If anyone has any ideas better than this please share them with me, if i don't get this fixed its no good if i can't steer it.

Thanks,

the only other options would be destructive, that should work, you may want to weld a piece of flat iron on the side of that puller to give it more strength and stop it from bending as you start to tighten the jack bolts.

Looks like a good attempt, maybe a little help from a rose bud. If the double nut won't hold weld a nut to the all thread

If it doesn't come easy with the aid of some heat I'd be using a hollow ram hydraulic cylinder with support clear around the casting. If your not careful your libel to break something. Also want to shim any clearances so your pulling against a solid block.

I'd bore a hole in a piece of 3/4 or 1" that covers a large area e.g. most of the machined flat area, and place the puller on top of that, with the puller bolt going through the 1" to the pin. And Kroil it too...

Hi and thanks for the info everyone!

I did a lot of heating, cooling etc.. soaked with Kroil oil etc.. And it still won't move...I believe the heat and cool method will work, but it will be slow going...I can't believe CAT would make this without a grease zerk or someway to lube it....

I'm not sure what else would work to pull it out. The puller i made is 1-1/4" flatbar with 1/2" u-bolt stock, not the cheapo all-thread. It is spaced close to the pin i'm pulling so it won't bend. I did manage to break a grade 5 bolt when i started pulling it the first time.. Now we have a grade 8..

I'd be curious as to how CAT would remove these etc.. and their tool..

Thanks again and feel free to comment or suggest ideas, i'm sure i'm not the first with this issue...

I've used a large socket sitting over that pin with a suitable size grade 8 bolt stacked with washers as the puller and it has worked well on a couple of old Cats, several heat and cool cycles first with loose juice will be your friend for sure.
Good luck
Mike

Great Idea Mike! I think the heat and cool idea is going to be my best bet also...

Old Magnet, you have sparked my curious small mind. What do you mean by a hollow hydraulic ram? I'm at a loss as to what you are referring to.. Please elaborate..

Thanks...
