Recently there was a thread regarding the precleaner glass jars that most tractors are missing. I still have several original jars. I have noticed within the past year or so, Ball is now making what appears to be the same jar and it can be purchased at most retail stores. Today, while at my local Menards store, I walked past the aisle where there was a complete display. I found the 4-pack of jars and purchased them to perform a comparison.

The new jars are made with modern glass that is free from the usual rougher texture bubbled glass that older Ball jars display. There are two distinct creases at opposite corners hinting that perhaps the glass is cast as two halves and fused together or maybe it is an un-eased crease within the glass mold. The glass thickness appears to be the same as the older jar. Both appear to be about the same weight. The original jar is approx. 4 inches tall whereas the newbie is only 3-3/4 inches. The older jar has a more robust bottom lip where the lid screws on however, both the original porcelain lined lid and the new stamped steel lid are interchangeable. I am not sure if there is enough purchase for the steel clamping ring of a precleaner to keep the newbie jar held firm. I will check it once I head back to the CPHQ and test fit it on one of my machines. The old pint jar has a little more style to the lettering and a few extra descriptive verbiage "Special", "Wide Mouth" and "Made In U.S.A." along with some vertical raised ribs on the sides and some rough concentric rings on the bottom. The newbie has the word "Mason" under the Ball logo and the capacity printed on the bottom curvature dilineated in metrics as "5SG 500ML.' The interesting thing that will put me out of the antique jar business is the price. 4 new jars with lids is only $5.99. It is the "Collection Elite Design Series, Wide Mouth Pint Jars For Special Creations And Gifts."

Newbie jar = left, original jar = right

What do you do about the gasket? I haven't been able to find one I guess because the modern way to seal these jars is with a cap.

Thanks ag-mike, I must go look at mine I guess. I am in CO until middle of Aug and cat is in WA.

I don't remember how this is set up on mine although the last time I changed I had to find one of those big old fashioned red rubber gaskets. I think my jar screw on, is that possible?

John, I've never screwed the jar on, it is held in place with the turnbuckle screw to tighten the shaped metal clamp band. Still, I suppose if the band is not too tight, you could screw the jar on, particularly if it was fitted with one of the older red rubber canning seals that you can still purchase.

I was under the impression the jar had the type of flange used on the plastic version replacements. The v-flange mates well with the v-clamp arrangement. Is that not correct? I really don't know.

Thank you for the responses, I am going back to WA in a few weeks and this is going to be the first thing I'm going to check out and report back. :mod:

The more I think about it I bet it's with a clamp and hand screw as B4D2 and OM described. For some reason I thought a few years back I had to have that red canning jar gasket. The person I got it from then said I could never get another one!

correct 4 the replacement plastic jar only, the v fitting is metal and not removable from the plastic jar plus it fits the v clamp groove . the glass jar uses a rubber oring, its placed on the jar so the v clamp clinches and seals it. o ring maybe available at ur hardware store.

here u go, the oring is placed below the glass flange, the tightened v clamp holds the jar by compressing the o ring to the glass flange.
this o ring is about shot!!

bruce, looking at the photos again i wonder if the new jars flange is proud "purchase" enough to keep the o ring from riding up over it when tightening the clamp ?

Thanks ag-mike,
O-ring is a Cat # 5B3323. Still a good number.
Has a cross section diameter of 4.780"
Odd ball size, apparently not a dash # equivalent.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
