Hi,

Can anyone point me in the direction to correctly test a dynamo of a D4D, please.

The machine is not charging, i put a new non OEM regulator on it and it was pegging the meter at 30amps for about an hour, then it went dead. There's nothing coming to the batteries at all.

Maybe its a dodgy regulator?.....but i want to rule out the actual generator itself......if i send it away for sure they will chuck a load of bits at it and could end up in the same boat.

So the brushes are good - about 2" long, the armature appears sound and doesn't short to earth, I tested the two pole terminals on the case and get a resistance of 26 ohms (effectively testing the field windings.

Anything else you would suggest before I put on another new regulator?

Did you polarize the new generator on installation?
Will the generator motorize?

Was that before or after the damage was done?

Check to see if the unit will motor.
Remove the generator, or disconnect belt, hook + lead to the Armature post and - to ground.
If unit runs as a motor then the regulator is most likely at fault.

Are you using the correct polarizing method for the genny?
Delco Remy units are type A, American Bosch is type B.

Motor tests:
Theres two parts to the Motor Test. First ground the FLD post to case/frame and apply voltage to the ARM post with case/frame grounded. If she spins good n smooth that says the Armature and Brushes and bearigns are in decent shape. Then unground the FLD and she should speed up a bit, if so the Fields are likely okay, if not they may be bad (shorted or open) in which case she wont charge correct. If it passes BOTH tests, it usually will charge okay.

so yes, it will motor, albeit slowly with quite a lot of smoke from the brush area......(its in the vice, not on the machine)

Sometimes it needs a bit of a push on the pulley, but once its turning it will continue

edit:

just read your motor test info.
With earth on the field windings it spins beautifully.
With the earth just hooked to the end casing it makes harder work of it all (smokes a bit)

is there an easy way to determine between the two (Delco and Bosch)?

That's not good, recheck the two step process I just posted. Seems you have a generator problem, likely field coils.

Is there a tag on the generator?
Type A would be the norm for a D4D. (USA version)
