OK! now my valve grinding man said that one head has been welded and one is cracked from starting inside a port and running through a seat. Casting # is 2F5317
Has anyone here welded, or had a cast iron head welded? how much did it cost? & how well did it work? any tips or tricks? I was thinking of a good pre-heating & welding with Inconel, a high nickel iron alloy (that I have on hand). Or do I just need to get a better head & save the bad one for a later day.

mate this is some interesting reading as far as I know welding heads can be succesful but it is a very specialized job and if the motor ever gets hot again it will open back up

No reason you can't weld it up yourself using proper procedures.. I'd figure on using valve seat insert/s if the crack migrates into the valve seat area.

I do have some ceramic fiber insulation for a blanket. It would be nice to have a total junker to practice on, both with the pins and the welding. Things like this seem to have a way getting completely ruined with one wrong twitch.
