I have heard a rumor that the D7F 94N5192 and UP with the 3306 engine is very similar to the D7G. I would appreciate information about this as I am currently interested in a very clean D7F in that group.
Thanks

The rumor is correct. I'm not going into the difference, but I'm sure someone will. Be sure to buy one after the breack in s/n#'s, which I think is in the 5000's somewhere.

Long story short,
When they changed to the 3306 at s/n 94N5192 they didn't change the transmission until 94N5660-up. The 3306 engine was to much for the earlier transmission.

When it sounds too good to be true.... The machine I was considering was 94N5603, just shy of the "good" D7F. Exceptionally clean Dept. of Navy tractor(still wearing o.d. green) w/new Cat cutting edges and new Cat S.A.L.T. rails etc. Should have known there would be a catch. Thanks again Old Magnet.

Doesn't have to be a deal killer, just realize what you have and if the price is right??? Nothing to prevent doing a transmission upgrade at some time when it/may need.

I was busy inspecting the D7E and did not take photos of the D7F. I did note the D7F's exceptionally good condition but did not consider it until I heard about the "good" D7F. This D7F has the 5" trunnion ball blade w/enclosed tilt lines, front and rear headlights and a fixed drawbar. The tractor is less than 200 miles from me and is priced at $38,000. Any thoughts?

After cruising the Machinery Trader list I'd say that is a good price but not an exceptional bargain. That's a 1973 machine, do you know/believe what the hours are?
Military stuff usually has winch and possibly back-up rippers. Does it have those features?
How does that price compare with the D7E your looking at?

A military D7F should have a 61G SN, not a 94N. It looks like somebody might be trying to pass this unit off as a low hour cream puff.

Does it have a carbine butt holder mounted on the floor plate to the right of the seat and sorta in front of the decelerator? That's another giveaway.

On edit, I'm looking at the OD green dozer in your picture and thinking that's the D7F in question. Maybe you're talking about another one.

Here's a 7F at Camp Dodge (Iowa).....they sold a pair about a month ago at the same location that brought $55,000 ea.

Doesn't say what the s/n is so no telling if it a low no. or not, and since the military machines had a different prefix I'm not sure where the s/n break would be.

From what I've been told, the low numbers are ok if you treat them easy......come to a complete stop before changing directions.

Just a thought would it be possible that the D7 being an ex gov machine could have been updated as if it was the Australian government they always seem to have heaps of money and always performs upgrades on there military stuff so maybe the US did as well ??
Is there some way of telling from the outside of the trans eg number ect of what the transmission is ??

Paul

Thanks for the info Old Magnet, d9gdon and D6c10K. Yes, the D7E(yellow tractor in the photo) is equiped with both back-up ripper mounts and a towing winch. The undercarriage has Cat alligator master links and is sealed but not lubricated. This machine was priced $28,600. There were several things that I did not like upon my inspection even though the appearance was good.
The D7F(o.d. green tractor in the background) does not have back-up rippers nor a winch. The information plate on the left side of the hard-nose stated the serial number of the tractor, the serial number of the engine, and the year of manufacture(1973) and stated Department of the Navy. The patina etc. of the plate lead me to believe it is authenic. I think the tractor was for the Marine Corps as the Navy was notoriously stingy with them. The Seabees generally got what they wanted.
Any thoughts?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
