I am sorry to re-visit the "painting issue" again but here it is.

This is a question for anyone who has recently painted CAT Vintage Gray in CA. What I have found is, as of April 2013, CA changed the regulations for paint companies selling in the state. I have scoured the archives here but nearly all of the products discussed are either prior to that date or being used in other states. I started by investigating Rustoleum. I went on-line and afterward visited paint stores and Home Depot (after the main office of Rustoleum referred me there) looking for Rustoleum 7400 Series Paint. HD told me they could not get it here and even tried one of their AZ stores with the same answer. So I found an on-line supplier and placed an order. I got a phone call almost immediately from them stating that they could not sell that product in CA but could ship it to Phoenix or Denver (two that I asked about). A problem with the Rustoleum paint is it can't be custom mixed that I can tell even if I could buy it here. Also along the way, I was told that Rustoleum has been bought out by PPG and Sherwin-Williams has bought out almost everyone else. S-W used to handle Rustoleum but won't now since PPG has bought out Rustoleum. What a mess!

This morning I visited a Sherwin-Williams Automotive store. They offered "solvent based" automotive and industrial (fleet and agricultural) paint but the paint needs a hardner plus a clear coat for the automotive type. The industrial product can be a paint and clearcoat combined so no clear coat is required. Then we talked primer and things really got out of hand pricewise. This is just a hobby and my budget can't stand paint at $350/gal. Besides, I am an amateur spray painter so everything has to be simple.

So will appreciate any help anyone can give me to shortcut the process to obtain a reasonably priced (non water based) paint purchased after Apr. 2013 that matches the color chip supplied by the ACMOC store here in CA?

I am envious of the rest of you folks who are not being controlled by the "Statists" like us out here and can still paint your machines in a normal manner!

I recently used Shirwin Williams Kem Kromik red oxide primer, and had a gallon mixed of Kem 4000. Kem 4000 mixed with hardener from O'rielly auto because I could buy less that a quart. I am satisfied but admittedly have only sprayed the boom on a pull grader. Shirwin Williams said the color standard was for semi gloss, the Kem 4000 is a gloss base, but I figured it will loose some gloss sitting outside anyway. Check your Shirwin dealer, Kem Kromik is not that expensive. Oh, they had a Fed standard color chart at the industrial store

Yes, this has been coming on for some time in Ca. I don't have an answer other than boot leg the stuff from out of state. Primer should not be a problem, try a selection from McMaster-Carr they are in state. Epoxies and Polyurethane's are still available but will require mixing to get the Cat yellow. Seems we soon will be limited to water base and whitewash!!!!

Hi, Dozerman51.
Seems to me the solution is simple. Declare the WHOLE entertainment industry a terrorist organisation, declare 'tinsel town', parts of L.A. and about half of the 'bayside' terrorist training camps and have the FBI exterminate 'em.

Or is that too simplistic an approach from one too far removed from the 'ackshyun'?

A kew-ree-yuss mind would like ter know.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

I painted my fifteen tailseat after April 2013 wasn't a problem. Go to a local automotive paint store that has DuPont products they'll have a line called nason, It's a slightly cheaper line of very good paint.I had the ACMOC paint chip matched no problem. It's a single stage paint meaning there is no clear coat to put on but it does require catalyst or "hardener". Spray it over a good sealer primer 20 minutes after priming.I like to use a white or light gray primer. But all paint is getting very expensive in california . Hope this helps you some.you can ad a flattner if you don't want the high gloss

I used Valspar tractor paint on my D2. It's solvent based and very reasonable. It also has an optional catalyst and I wouldn't paint without it. It makes the paint, harder, dries faster, and flows out to a smoother, glossier finish. It cost about 35$ per gallon plus 8$ for the hardener. I don't know if they can custom mix, but I think they have a grey. Their line offers colors for the major industrial and farm brands.

I'll have to investigate the Nason paint line. I looked on line, found the local DuPont dealer but when I drove there, I could not find them. I'll do some more looking. I had a discussion with Sherwin-Williams on the Kem 4000 and got "blank stares".

Nason is a good brand, If a Dupont store says they have no formula it is there on the side of Steve's can. I have a mix for it in Dupont Imron, but can not find the can with the formula right now.
The pictures look nice
Good luck
