Guys, I'm wanting to buy a new hot shot gooseneck trailer to replace my 35 year old tri axle gooseneck. I'm looking for a 25' deck plus 5' tail to haul 31' joints of 2 7/8 tubing and my Cat toys. Most buy the Big Tex trailers.

http://bigtextrailers.com/25gn-heavy-duty-tandem-dual-axle-gooseneck/

But I came across this MCT trailer on ebay and it looks pretty nice.

One thing that stands out about the MCT is it weights a 1,000lbs less than the Big Tex. MCT 6,180 and Big Tex 7,250.

Can you all give me some insight to help me buy the best trailer? Thanks M-

The 1000 lbs difference won't be in the coat of paint so what is missing of the light model that is essential on the heavier one.
Very few manufacturers over engineer.

I see a lot of PJ Trailers in the oilfield. They even have a self contained air ride option for a tandem dual gooseneck.

You could call MCT and ask them about the weight difference, could be it is a more highly engineered trailer.

Mike, I was assigned at MCT for 1995-2001 inspecting the building of special trailers for hauling ordinance for DOE. Can't speak for their quality now but they built good trailers for us then. They built 20, 40 foot van type trailers with extremely tight quality requirements.

Hey OulSlick,

I don't think you can haul the HO D8 on it, might be a little too heavy for those trailers.

The next trailer I buy will have some premium brakes on it, my present trailer came with b grade off brand brakes that didn't last or work for crap, I replaced with Dexter which seem to be better quality. The next one will either be over sized electrics or Electric over hydraulic disk.

The second issue is paint, my present unit was built in Texas and I don't think they used a quart of paint on the hole thing, it had no paint on the bottom, I had to have a 4 year old trailer striped and repainted---Next time I will supply the epoxy paint and supervise the application.

Well I could have bought a Big Tex 9 miles down the road from me and saved $2,000 but I liked this trailer better. Called and asked them how it's a 1,000lbs lighter. They said the main trailer is identical to the Big Tex but there redesigned neck saves a bunch of weight, the side rails and tail are lighter too. I got it with the winch so if the McMobile breaks down hopefully I can be rescued with it. Red and I are headed out tomorrow for the 1,700 mile round trip drive. She's very happy the McMobile is down for repairs and were taking the GMC Duramax. I would much rather drove the McM.

Pops, shouldn't be a problem hauling the HO on this trailer if I use the McMobile cuz it's got big rig tires and wheels on it!

10,000 or 12,000 lbs axles? I am casually shopping for one with the 12,000 lb axles. From what I have read they have better brakes and I like the extra strength when pushing the weight limit as we all seem to do.

what ever you buy DO NOT get a gatormade. over priced and i hate mine with a passion. sorry brakes, and terrible design on ramp width adjusting. takes 2 people and strong backs just to slide ramps over. i like the becker trailers. i think they are in wisconsin and they look to be identical to PJ trailers but cheaper. they offer regular height deck as well as low profile. they have website and occationally post on ebay. good luck, eric
