I have a D-4 Cat, not sure of its year. The tag on the back end below the fuel tank has S/N 40A3578, series C. The hose for the discharge side of the hydraulic pump developed a leak so I replaced it, now the fitting on the top of the pump leaks. It feels loose. Is it a threaded connection with a gasket or "O" ring? It will take a 2 in+ wrench to turn it. If I tighten it the lines will need to be rerouted to fit. Is there a web site that would show a breakdown of the pump, gaskets and connections? (Nearest Cat dealer is 2 hours away and the manuals I have are for an older model).
The pump is on the front, left side of the engine, below the generator. It has a 1 in. npt st. L 90 that is reduced to 3/4 in npt for the hose.
Yes, I am looking for an easy way to fix this, I want to go catch some more trout.
Last advice I received from ACMOC was very good and help a lot!
Thanks!

Must be an add on hydraulic pump. The Cat system uses steel lines with o-ring flange connections to the pump.

Pretty sure the pump is a Cat part as it is part of the front end of the engine. Internally driven, I am guessing off the front end of the crankshaft along with the camshaft gear. I will try to get the grease and dirt off of it and see if I can find a part number on it. I need to get the correct manual for it. I am looking at an older manual. I think this machine is a late 60's or 70's model with electric start.
Thanks.

If it is a Cat system there should be a serial number on the engine side of the dash mounted tank or on the top of the fender mounted tank.

Your s/n indicates a 1961 D4C.

I have the same tractor 40A3638 with Cat hydraulics. The service manual and parts book doesn't cover the hyd system, it's a separate book. You local dealer can dig it up if you have the # off of the hyd tank. They can fax or email the parts breakdown. If you can't find the system group # PM me and I'll send you the one off of mine, they will need the # to help you.

I have been referencing the parts book for the 40Axxxx application.
For a single valve (dozer) application the s/n should be in the 48Exxxx
series. That's where the pump connection lines are shown to be steel and flanged 0-ring. Better get a picture.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
