Hi members, I am picking up a D6-5R in late november and was wondering if pre com chambers are available? the bloke who owns it said it used use a little water back when he was running it.

Were these a popular machine back in the day?
Are parts readily available?

Hello Nick, I'm not sure on parts, but from what I've heard, for a farm cat, the folks around here kind of had a love hate relationship with them.

They loved the five speed, boosted steering clutches, balance, and the 4600 engine ran real smooth.

But from what I'm told that was about all that was liked about the 4600. Compared to the three lunger they replaced, fuel consumtion was dismal. I'm told a good running three lunger would whip one except the 5R had an extra gear to fall back on. There were several that got 9U engines when the 4600 gave up. I know of one that had a 4-71 Detroit put in it.

My favorite 5R story was that when they first came out no one around had heard an engine that sounded so smooth. Apparently neighbors would shut their tractor off so they could listen to another neighbor with a 5R go by when plowing the first few rounds of an ajoining field.

Enjoy your tractor.

I've told the story before but I cut my teeth on an old "R" series CAT in the Oil Patch! We used it for moving the old Cable Tool Rigs. This particular tractor always seemed to have a lot under the hood. One day my brother told me the Owner had used too much Ether to start it. He supposedly put a U series crank, rods and pistons in it, then turned up the pump(?). I never had a chance to verify the story as a year or two passed when the Owner pulled in with a 1960's 9U. The old girl got parked after that. A few years ago, he died, I saw the old girl rusting and sinking into the ground, a sad day indeed!

The 5r motor is 4600 and I should still have some used precombustion chamber

A 9u does bring more horse power to the game, but since I started on a RD 6 then moved up to a 4R and then a 9U I never felt under powered driving a 4R.The power assist steering was a big improvement from arm strong steering on a RD 6.The only problem was the open master clutch that I had bind up from to much dust.I was told to put a little oil on the linkage every morning and that made the dust build up on it.But know one gave me the instruction of washing the oil off every 4 or 5 days and start over.

I have 5r189 in the shed, it still runs good, the transmission is basically interchangeable with the dry clutch 9u, I have robbed pieces out of a 9u tranny for mine. if the d4600 blows up, a person can drop the d318 in its place if it has the dry clutch, if you wanted to upgrade to an oil clutch you'd have to change out the top shaft in the tranny by the looks of my 9us that have the oil clutch. the pony is the same between the two with different exhaust manifolds and a different magneto. front mount ccu and or hydraulic units from a 8u will interchange with the 5r, as well as final drive components. the 5r is the narrow 60" guage tractor. the 4r is the wide guage, the 8u is the narrow and the 9u is the wide, so if you needed a final drive housing you would need to find an 8u for parts. or you could make it wide guage by swapping everything over from a 9u including the deadaxles,
