here is another way to run an electric start pony

My D42T had similar set up. Got fed up charging battery so pulled the contraption shortly after getting my machine. I'll never forget the charge I got hearing that starting engine fire up after using the rope for the first time.

I've wondered before if the pull rope spins the flywheel faster than a small electric motor for that initial impulse to the MAG.

for speed, it would all have to do with gearing, that was the first time i have ever seen such a thing, i was facinated by it lol

this is the only picture i have of it, he sold it to his grandfather, whom now has 3 or 4... he also has a Gas CAT 60 with a spare motor, he has yet to start, 3 pull graders, a no.11 motor grader, etc... just to sum it up im jealous

I think my D2 has had something like that in the past-there's a battery tray on the fender & holes drilled right through the brass patent plate...

We have used an electric motor to start the pony engine. For some reason the older we get we seem to tucker out sooner.

The one someone went to the most effort that I have seen was a RD6 where they had to make a pulley and hub to fit the shaft that you put the crank on and then the bracket to hold the starter on the radiator and then had starter button in the end of the pipe that was used to tighten the belt. We have had pictures of different variation of motors both gas and electric on the fender of D2 and D4 tractors here on this board over the years.And not being very good with carburetors or magnetos and having a pony that will sputter but will not take off and run I know why someone would build a makeshift starter.
