Hi,
I have D311 compleet in parts.
Also a lot of spare parts so i am able to put thing together to one engine.
Now am i looking for the best way to get all the gaskets seals and rubber rings.

does someone know if there are compleet gasket kits available for this engine?
or does someone have a list with al the numbers?

i want this engine build on a water pump and for having a reserve engine.

second thing is i have 3 crankshafts so i have to find the best one and than i have to find the bearings for it.
We have a lot of bearings but i don't know witch size over, under or standard... new ones and used ones.
i heart that it is possible to rebuild the bearings by put a new layer of material (Babit?) on it.
And than turn them back to the size you need.

someone experience with that?

I will try to add some photo's later.
This will be a winter project so i have a bit time to find everything

Thanks Niels

Hi Nielski,
your Parts Book should have the Standard Part Numbers for the crankshaft bearings.
The bearings you have should have Part Numbers stamped into them--BUT I have seen some aluminium ones that were stamped with ink numbering.
The bearing halves can be measured for thickness by micrometer or vernier and compared.
Then the same dimension measured halves are paired and clamped together, with a hose clamp or similar, and the inside diameter will then be measured.
This diameter, plus bearing clearance, will tell you the size of the bearings.
Standard bearings, if you have any, will be the thinnest, thicker ones will be for undersized bearing journals, they can be measured the same way and the journal size will be found.

I am not sure about bearing types used in these engines--others may know more than I.
If you have steel backed babbitted bearings then they can be re-babbitted, with suitable babbit, and machined to size.

If you have full thickness aluminium bearings others have machined new ones from suitable aluminium material--sorry I do not know the aluminium metal formula for this.
I recall a back in the 1970's a local man had the metal analysed and found similar material and made a set of bearings for his U D2 as he could not afford the Dealer price for a set.

There used to be gasket kits but, they were discontinued back in the 1960's--if I recall correctly.
Olsen's may have some kits of their own.
I may have a Cat Gasket kit list here somewhere--will look in the shed in daylight hours tomorrow.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi EDB,

Thanks for the tip of measuring the bearings. (On the photo you see the used ones the "new" ones are still in the old cat boxes)
The problem i have with the bearings is that the numbers are stamped with ink, so i can't read it anymore

I am going to measure al my bearings to see the size
The crankshafts are going to a engine shop to clean and measure them.

I have 2 and a half set pistons and liners so i take the best 4.

I am also working on my 4U.
Making a hi hitch.
I have an original hi hitch but that isn't working with the hydraulic pump.

My 5U is also in the shop for a little final drive work (waiting for parts to come From the usa next week)

Thanks Niels

Hi Nielske,
all the standard size crank bearings are still available: #1 5F1073, #2 and #4 5F1074, #3 5F1075, and #5 5F1076 for which I recently priced around $500. The standard size rod bearings are available: 4H3026 for $100 ea.
Standard crank size is 2.75 (clearance 006 to 0085, max 015), standard rod size is 2.625 (clearance 007, max 013).

All mains and rods are also available at 030 undersize except for #1 main bearing - I could not find that one:
#2 and #4 5F1078, #3 5F1079, and #5 5F1080 for $330 plus std 5F1073 @ $75. Rods are 4H3027 at $30 ea.

I had my crank turned 030 under for all journals (mains and rods) except for #1 main, which I had welded back up to std.

Nielske,
I see your pump is mounted on the back of your 4U.
Did you ever have the little gear box between the pump and the transmission apart?
Mine collects oil from the transmission which I suspect it isn't suppose to do.
Thanks!

Hi Team,
something to consider with regards the aluminium bearings is that they can be machined to fit a lesser than the standard undersize that Cat state-- ie, 0.020" instead of the full 0.030".
The crank can be ground undersize to say 0.020" u/size and some worn 0.030" bearings machined to suit the 0.020" crank.
The same would apply if you had a worn 0.030" u/size crank and worn 0.050" bearings--not sure if Cat supplied 0.050" u/size bearings for these but I think some aftermarket suppliers did..
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for this info!

This weekend i take all the bearings together and measure them.

Neil why are the .030 undersize cheaper than the standard?:tape2:

Thanks Niels

Hi drujinin,

The little gearbox?
I only have a shaft that go's from the transmission directly to the pump (that coupling from the transmission is a problem to find..)
Will try to make some photo's tomorrow.
or i miss something on my pump, i moved it from te front to the back (i know it isn't live but i don't want the hoses around it)

Thanks Niels

One of the vagaries of pricing I suppose. Even within the size ranges, there is wide variation - one bearing is 30, another is 125

I'm reading an old LaPlant B21 Parts catalog which states - All rear pumps are equipped with a solid plug in the drain port. This is to prevent oil from draining out of the transmission case should the gasket and coupling seal become worn and leak.
(Important Part) - Fill the clutch housing of the pump with one pint of SAE 90 gear oil and check level each 50 hours of operation.

This last comment leads me to believe that the box I am referring to is/was a clutch housing but is used as an oil reservoir for the pump spline coupling.
I'll get a photo of mine over the weekend.

Added the photo's.
