Hello, first time posting and looking to help a friend without a computer

Have a 1942-43 Cat 12 9K5000 or so Grader and the PTO Shaft for the controls has wiped out U Joints, I take it these are non standard size PTO Shaft sized joints as I can not find anything wide enough with small enough caps. I was a truck mechanic and made shafts for road tractors over 20 years ago and have nothing close to these. I have ordered a parts manual but trying to get this up as soon as possible for a spring road repair after the snow.

Does anybody have a Parts Manual handy where they could look up the part number for the 2 U Joints please.?

The caps are about 13/16" .. on 1 joint the caps were brass and piened in but the other had internal snap rings 2 1/16" on the ring od width and 3 1/16" outside width of the joint

My friend tried Cat and they gave him the wacked out eyeball twisting in head look, although he did get parts about 12 years ago and the parts listing was on microfiche then but the dealer did not even have the system any longer, however they had dropped 25k on undercarriage work on a dozer so they probably didn't mind spending some time

Any help would be appreciated and read some neat info I forwarded on to him as he though was a 1949 but it has to be before 45 for sure. Interesting to have read in the operators manual where to place TNT to blow the machine up if needed back during WW2

Again thanks for taking the time to read and help if you can

Must be an odd ball for sure. No aftermarket interchange listed for 9K1-up or for 7T1-3099. Most all the other 12's and 14's use the same u-joint.

Hi hg,
it is possible those joints are Blood Brothers in origin.

I note you have drive line experience, so if you have no luck chasing down the correct parts and seeing as the drive has 4 bolt flanges at each it would be possible to make or purchase adaptor flange plates to adapt in later available pattern joints. Have done this on vintage trucks etc. in the past.

At The Dealer we had a range of adaptors to adapt drives to transmissions, hyd. pumps etc. on our Wolff Hydraulic Test Centre as well as some for our Taylor Engine Dynamometer.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

I don't have the parts book to check it out but it may be possible to change out the entire flange to flange drive shaft with a later, more common unit.

I had the same problem on a 212 grader, the original caps were brass and turned directly on the cross without needle bearings. I solved it by swapping in a 212 shaft from a year or so later unit that used used the "mechanics" style joint. I got the joint at NAPA, you might be able to try something similar.

I don't have the #12 9K parts book but here is a #112 3U that uses the same odd ball joint.

I can provide grader models that use the later common U-joint if desired.

Many years back, when I worked at a real auto parts store/machine shop, Spicer supplied us with a catalogue that I would love to possess again.
It had every u-joint listed that was ever made, companion flanges, and you could even order new driveline tubing from them.

Many times guys would come in, looking for parts to build a driveline for a truck, or even antique watercraft, and I spent many hours pouring through the book to get all the right parts ordered.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
