I just found this site and this is my first post.

I have a question regarding a older Cat gen set. It is located on the west coast of Cook Inlet, Ak. in a old cannery Called Snug Harbor which is located on Chisik Island. This place is a virtual museum and is filled with 4 steam engines, 11 generators, and a neat old Bolinder crude oil engine. My brother -in-law and I have been going up to Snug for the bast 5 years helping his daughter and her husband convert the cannery into a B & B or eco- tourist spot.
There is a 30 kw Cat Generator which looks complete still wired up to the cannery which we would like to use as a stand by generator. Last summer we tried to start it with no luck. There was diesel fuel at each injector and we gave it a couple of shots of either but could not get a pop out of the old girl. It has been sitting for probably the better part of 50 years in a dry generator building. We will be going up again this summer and would try again if I had some pointers on what to look for. I am not sure that we had the fuel shut off lever in the right place. we were just guessing on the correct position. I looked all over the office and could not find any operators manual or parts list. The former winter caretaker said it was always hard to start and was a rather dirty old leakier .

The diesel has the following id info: D311H 30TH 377 P.N. 7L14

Anyone interested can see the pictures of the cannery by looking up------Snug Harbor Chisik Island it is one spectacular place

Any help will sure be appreciated by one and all

Cheers

That would be an "H" series D311 s/n 51Bxxxx with generator s/n 30TH377 with 7L14 3-phase generator rated at 230-460V 60 hertz @ 1800 rpm.

Original choice of direct electric start or side mounted (buzz bomb) gasoline starting engine or compressed air starting.

Fuel shut off is valve cock. Should be a line or mark on top of the stem to indicate off/on or on would be with the stem square corners in line with fuel flow.

Sorry I don't have operators manual, just Parts Books.

I have a D311 gen set, oddly they made 2 different d311, the earlier 311 started at a 20 KW unit that ran at 1200 rpm, then 30 KW at 1800 rpm these units had the injector pump on the left looking from the gen end and a totally different unit that had the injector pump on the right that I know little about.

Does yours look like this ?

Hi Richard,
your engine should have a Safety Shutoff System fitted and we will likely need some pictures so we can determine which type is fitted. Then we can advise you as to the re-set proceedure so you can overcome the rack shutoff to enable the engine to be started.
Usually requires setting a lever or plunger to allow the rack to be operated. From memory the shutoff usually dumps oil pressure to stop the engine, so it needs resetting.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

There was a thread about a CAT GENSET up in Minnesota last year which had lots of photo's and discussion on the engine safety shutdown system.
I will try later today to link it if work isn't too busy........

No it does not look like yours. The one at Snug Harbor does not have the exciter and the diesel looks different too. I am still trying to post pictures

Many thanks for you help and interest

Reset is that plunger/button you see off to the left of the governor control.
