I went out today and uncovered the 2U I have known about for many years. I posted a few pictures of it last week. The owner said it had a Shepherd engine kit installed in the 50's. He said it had higher horse power but wasn't sure if it was a full H/O engine. I really want the tilt cylinder for my 14A. That would make a huge difference pioneering in new roads in our steeper country. I am hoping the belt driven hydraulic pump can be changed over to my 14A.

Hi, 657Bruce.
Neat find and thanks for sharing. Question: That jigger looks eminently restoreable so why not salvage her? Two common reasons come to mind - cash and WIFE. LOL.

There were several different power upgrades for the 2U and 13A D8's, the Hi-Output being just one of them. I have heard of the Shepherd engine conversions, even from the depths of DowNunder and there was also the McCoy Special which featured a re-power with the DW21 engine, I think it was the D337, with the Rootes blower on it and quite a bit of additional weight to give it traction. I am told that the Earth shook when one of the jiggers was barrelling backwards to pick up the next scraper.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The picture of the Hydraulic dozer tilt looks to be the same make as the power steering, “Rivinius”. Also the grousers look to have been rebuild just before it was parked, don’t show any ware that I can see.

Hello Deas; would you happen to have any idea what was the horse power of a D337, in a 2U,or13A,-D8? Also how much more weight was a D337, over a D1300? Wasn't a complete D1300, near 5 tons ? Cheers; Chum

Hi, Chumduffy.
I have no idea about relative weights for the D13000 and D337 engines, although I doubt there would be all that much difference 'cos the D337 developed its greater power at rather higher revs and with the addition of a Rootes supercharger. In fact, it would not surprise me to find that the D337 ackshully weighed less than the D13000.

The D13000 as fitted to the 2U was about 130 hp and I'd bet that the D337 was somewhat above that, maybe as much as 30 to 50 hp more.

McCoy's added MUCH heavier rock guards to the tracks, MUCH heavier fenders and a MUCH heavier belly plate to their conversions to give them the weight to be able to USE the extra grunt from the D337. I have also heard that the extra revs of the D337 gave the McCoy Special a reverse speed of close to 10 mph. No wonder it made the ground rattle a bit if it was rumbling backward at that pace.

I'll not be very surprised if Kelly or Old Magnet or EDB step in here and fill in the blanks for us.

I don't have a library of reference books and tech bulletins to turn to for detailed information. Most of what I have to pass on comes straight out of my (aging) memory.

Just my 0.02.

They have added hyd. steering clutch release cylinders too. I helped install a set one time on an old D8. Sure made it easier to work those clutches. Pretty clean old 2U. Good luck on getting it running.
If you need any fuel pump testing or injectors rebuilt, call me; Bill Walter 816 891 8654

Tilt cylinder might be a little slow as the Rivinius pump is only rated for 5 gpm @ 1200 rpm and that appears to be a pretty good sized cylinder.

Use the "search" function. Coverage was done by "Swishy" on about 9/5/2011 on the Shepard HO D8 and the "McCoy Special" complete with specs and pictures.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
