hi a generous man sent me a d318 parts book dated October 1952.it says serial numbers 5v5001-up. My number on my engine is 8u5630. does this book cover my main and pony exactly?
Answer is both yes and no. The 5V50001-up is the Industrial Engine version of the D318. It will work for most parts but anything below the oil pan flange is different than the 8U/9U and some bolt ons will be different.
The pony motor is pretty much the same but some bolt on's will be different also.
Thank you. Lots of success comparing part numbers and identifying differences. Usually oversized pistons are marked on top, is this the case with Caterpillar pony engines?
Not always, some go by part number, some are stamped, some have nothing, depending on source of parts and whether they are turned down from one big oversize.

would someone show me the correct tool or otherwise non destructive way of removing the valve bushing retainers? the stuck valves were obviously easy![]()
If the bushings are free (almost never are) stick a screwdriver in the port and pry against the bushing.
If they are stuck I usually compress the spring, remove the keepers and pull the valves so you can wail away with whatever it takes to move them. Usually a piece of pipe will work without buggering things up.
