Noticed the temp gauge wasn't coming up on my D6c the other day so yesterday I pulled off the dash cover to see what was up. As usual there was a mouse nest in among the wires but I didn't think that was the problem since the temp gauge isn't electic.

After taking a closer look I could see the mouse had chewed the plastic covering off the copper line to the temp gauge, but that shouldn't hurt anything. Must have been a determined mouse because it had also chewed the insulation off four wires, one of which was to the amp guage.....when I started and ran the machine it must have contaced the temp guage line and shorted.....the arc burned a hole in the line, so now I get the fix wires and buy a new temp guage/line assy.

No way to make the dash mouse-proof....only thing I can think to do is put a few poision blocks in the dash and hope they get sick before they chew the wires again.

I put little Dixie cups full of moth balls wherever I think they are likely to make a home. Over the years this has always worked for me.

Good Luck

Feed cats around the farm, only varmits we have are larger ones, racoons and skunks mostly (they're probably drinking the milk we put out for the cats:lol)
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Constant battle here with critters, we live out in the sticks and any shelter is a home for something. Wood rats are the worst, chomp right through the wires, hoses and any plastic, rubber, and even the wire mesh in the house foundation vents. Any vehicle parked for more than a day needs to have the hood left up or there are occupants. I run a trap line 24/7 but still can't keep up. Going to try the bucket of water with soda bottle on a shaft smeared with peanut butter next. Hear that works pretty well.

Old Magnet, tell us more about the bucket of water trick, these vermon are eating our trucks right down to the frame rails out here. Another thing that works well is a plastic 5 gallion bucket half full of water, they climb down to get a drink and can't get out and drown. I'm setting out half a dozen buckets today bacause this year the mice and packrats are worse than they have ever been.

Hi all

I use pine sol cleaner for pack rat control, seem to work well!

Does any one have information on how to adjust pinion on a RD6 Serial 2h1455. How do you get to it, as its under the diesel tank? It will not stay latched.

Thanks

D4D83J,
It's a variation of what you describe.
5-gallon bucket partially filled with water.
Take a 2-liter soda bottle and run a rod throught the cap and bottom and through the bucket walls.
Smear peanut butter on the soda bottle for bait.
Provide some sort of ramp for the critters to get to it.
When they jump on the bottle it rotates and dumps them in the water where they drown.
