James' first Caterpillar R2 4J 523 SP

My Son James (age 10) brought his 1st Caterpillar yesterday, an R2 4J series gas tractor built in 1939. I've been putting away money each month in his bank account since he was born, so he has funded the purchase himself.

The tractor is in good condition for it's age and it has been dry stored inside a garage for the last 15 years, so there is no sign of rust on the tinwork, the only things missing so far are both front track guards and the toolbox.

We will be bringing it home in a couple of weeks time, so i'll post some more pictures when it's out in the open and on the trailer. James is pictured siting on the tractor wearing the white england shirt.

Good investment for you and your son to spend time together don't know what you payed for the, what appears to be a very well preserved R2 but if James holds on to it for the next, say fifty years, probably a very good investment:D You are indeed a cool Dad. Have fun. Don

Looks like a damn fine first tractor. I can't think of a better way for a dad and a son to build a great lasting bond, other than hunting and fishing that is!:D

Hi David,
Looks like a great little tractor, I'm sure your son is going to enjoy it ! (Sadly my son became interested in a different marque (Nuffield).

David what a great little banger James now has the care of, the R2 is not that common to find in the U.K., this tractor looks in great fettle with good paint and well looked after, all my Father gave me was hard work, how the World has changed.

p.s. I have some books on the R2 in my heap ?

Dear All,

Many thanks for your comments, James can't wait to get the tractor home and try out his new purchase!

TC - I may well need to take you up on your offer, do you have a parts book & op's manual available?
