One of the things I enjoy about restoring old Cats is the nice people you meet along the way, good folks willing to help others save old yellow iron, and I often get visitors calling by singularly to say hi, or every now and then they come in droves, always invited of course. The past 2 weeks I've hosted some real nice visitors to my farm, the first event was a 4 day "Southern Fling" I held over the weekend of May 2,3,4 and 5, enjoyed by over a dozen people, and today I had our inhouse Cat. Expert "Mr. Edb" return with 4 members of his Caravan Club for a visit where his friends were introduced to a few of my old Cats and given the opportunity to learn how to drive them, needless to say there were smiles all round, me included, because sharing my old Cats for others to learn how to drive and enjoy is very satisfying, particularly the many young kids who visit who might become enthused enough themselves to become future custodians.

I hosted the second "Southern Fling" at my place to allow one of our Canadian Caterpillar fraternity Roger Myram ("Rmyram") and his lovely family meet some of the Aussies he regularly chats to on these antique Cat. Forums, as they were revisiting Oz for a wedding and family holiday and we managed to drag nice folks from a fairly wide area, including two guys from the island State of Tasmania, Steve Fielding "Steve90" and his good mate Brett, who endured a long 12 hour overnight ferry ride across the open seas of the Bass Straight followed by a 3 hour drive to get here, other attendees included Neil Clydesdale "Wombat" and his long suffering wife Marilyn, known as "The Dragon Lady", Eddie Bedwell "Edb" and his Geelong football club mad, but sweet wife Denise also attended, as did Peter Mekis of Caterpillar Australia and his lovely wife Bernie, herself a former Caterpillar Australia employee, as was her Dad, as is their son, 4 generations with yellow blood coursing through their veins, while Colin Warwick "Wimmera Farmer" drove 4 hours from his farm at Horsham with his low loader carrying his D6 and D2 for us to enjoy, along with Bruce Colyer "BruceOz", a man who exemplifies the true Caterpillar spirit of generosity and helping others for no financial gain, all fantastic folks.

Over the weekend of the Fling my long suffering wife "Anna the Saint" ensured we ate some good food prepared with clean hands and the wives were looked after, without the support of our families this journey often isn't possible as you all know, and to her I say a very public thankyou. I'll share some photo's I took, and hopefully BruceOz or others might share theirs, as my pathetic skills as a photographer are known far and wide, following the Fling Roger kindly helped me refit a reconditioned head to my RD6, along with a better water pump borrowed off my Diesel 35 as the original on the RD6 had rotted away the welsh key and tapered drive pin of the impeller, preventing it from spinning and causing the diesel motor to overheat when I was giving her a good flogging plowing my farm, thanks again Roger.

My sincere thanks to everyone who made the effort to join me in welcoming Roger and his family, I know they thoroughly enjoyed our hospitality.
Regards
Mike

Nice pics, thanks Mike.

Maybe next year a couple more Tassie native cat types could drop by and check this event out?

G'day Mike. Liked your pictures, looked like everyone was having a good time. Is Colin's D6 a 9U with a front mounted winch with C frame and angle blade. If it is that's hopefully what mine will look like eventually

More schnapps Kevin, I reckon it is a 8U, sure sounded nice trying to drag some dead 3 and 4 tonne redgum trees up out of the billabong, even with my two D4's on chains helping those big old trees didn't move hardly a inch, their roots still attached just enough, gave the old Cats a good workout though.

Inter674, it was 3 years ago I held my first Southern Fling, my Therapist thought I was recovered enough to attempt another😆

Mike

Man that looks good Mike. Bunch of jokers, some tractors, bit of r'n'r on one of them, dawg on the back of the Landcruiser and probably some dogs on the barbie as well. You'll have to post the names left to right in the photos so we can put names to faces for these upstanding gents!
Totally envious : ))
Cheers,
Neil

Noticed in the picture of the cats on the trailer you have tires under the D2 and also under the blade of the six. Have not seen that before. Is there a reason other than showing your pure love for the old girls by giving them a softer ride. Is it possible your roads are as bad as ours?

The second photo of two intelligent looking boys is Bruce "BruceOz" on the right, with Colin "Wimmera Farmer" on the left, while the group photo next to the pull grader was taken over at my neighbours John Cox's farm, he collects rare fully restored John Deeres out of the USA and we visited his collection Sunday morning, starting from the left is Eddie "Edb", Bruce "BruceOz", Brett from Tasmania, Colin from Horsham "Wimmera Farmer", John Cox my neighbour, Roger "Rmyram" from Canada sitting with his son, and Steve, "Steve90" from Tasmania, now known as Fred Flintstone, because he runs rock crushing plants😆.

The photo next to the old Toyota is Roger and his lovely family, along with our mutt "Oreo", named after the Oreo biscuits because he's black and white, he came from the animal pound as a 10 week old pup, funniest dog we have ever owned, he loves visitors, and riding in the back of any vehicle, while the first photo of the Cats lined up shows Eddie "Edb" second from the left and his caravan club mates either side, all great guys, only one had any idea how to drive a Cat., but we soon fixed that.

We had some great food over the weekend, Thursday night was welcome dinner at the Irish pub, the Shamrock Hotel in Echuca with Roger and his family, Friday was a fantastic camp oven lamb stew prepared by Roger and his sweet wife Arla, cooked slowly in the coals of the big redgum fire we had burning, Sat. night was ribeye roasts cooked perfectly in the oven by "Anna the Saint" using a Californian method we learnt in the Salinas Valley, always moist and tender, but cooked just right, breakfast each morning was bacon and eggs, lunch was fresh sandwiches, and every night there was the odd glass of wine or beer or two enjoyed around the camp fire, all good fun. Roger and his family actually stayed here for 8 days I think, it was a fantastic visit we wont forget, they are great ambassidors for Canada.
regards
Mike

This home farm is only 110 acres, a mixture of irrigated and dryland cropping, plus Redgum forest located on the banks of the Campaspe River, a perfect sandbox for playing with old Cats.

It looks like you all had a great weekend or week as it turned out. You make me pretty green with all those "operating machines" un-like mine. I will have to call in one day and check out your toys next time I am up your way.
It was great to see your photos.
Cheers
Geoff.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
