Replaced the engine & torque converter oil coolers on my D6c (was getting a little oil in coolant) and was wondering what to use to degrease the coolant system.

Have heard of using a detergent like dishwasher soap or dawn dish soap.......There are also cooling system treatments available from Cat or parts stores but they seem to be more for removing scale.
Thought about using something like Simple Green or similar cleaner in a fairly strong mix.....what do you think?

When I worked for the Porsche dealer we had oil coolers fail sometimes and they would get oil in the coolant, we would complete the repair as needed, drain the cooling system completely, refill with clean water and use a cup of tide laundry detergent. We would run the car for 20-30 min, then drain/refill with clean water. Repeat the run/drain with clean water then refill with the proper coolant/water mix. The next time the car came in for service we would check the coolant tank for residue and there was usually none or very little. I know a Porsche is a lot different than a Caterpillar but the problem/concept is the same, you need something to remove the oil and hold it in suspension in the water so you can get it out of the cooling system. Hope this helps.

You really don't want anything that will foam. While it is a good detergent, I would not use Dawn dishwashing detergent because of the potential for foam. I have always heard diswasher detergent, but Tide is a good grease cutter too and doesn't foam in the washer.

Neighbor who has had semi trucks for a generation or two told me Tide was the best thing to clean a fuel tank if you had to have one welded. The local welding shop will not touch one until there is absolutely no smell of fuel in it.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks,
I may try the laundry detergent and see what happens.....it seems to get the grease out of my jeans.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
