Couple of questions for the experts.

I have a test pump setup for my injectors and I am wondering what is proper behavior of the injector. All 4 of mine have a similar spray pattern (thin but high speed stream) and they range in VOP from 1100 to 1500psi. 1500psi is standard.

I looked on Youtube and found some testing videos and they clearly show other types of injectors POP when they release. Should the old Cat injectors do the same?

I have no leakage at lower than VOP, and the stream is even, and shoots out at a 5 degree angle. Normal? I can operate my test pump slowly, and I can get a weak stream at the opening pressure, but a fast pump action will shoot it out fast.

I am going to send them out to get pressure and gap adjusted, but I just want to know what to expect.

Thanks

A satisfactory valve should emit a completely atomized spray with a sharp cutoff of fuel and no dribble.
On the test apparatus the injection pump would be set to a .350" rack setting to establish an adequate flow rate for testing. Your slow pumping would not apply.

Yes, there should be a distinct opening (poping) at the correct pressure,
1500 psi for this particular injector.

That is exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you.

I sent the injectors to Bill Walter for rebuild.

Would appreciate hearing some feedback on how the service works out. I don't recall ever hearing any results information nor much in the way of BB input on injector discussions.

Sure thing. I will test them on my pump setup when I get them back.

HF hole punch pump, a tee, gauge, and a spare injector line. Drained the hydraulic oil and filled it with diesel.

Seems to work well!

Just a couple of evenings ago I was talking with a fellow past service mgr./training instructor and he remembers back in the 70's when the 1100 series engine came out with "Pencil injectors", that the hand pump used to test these type injectors could not be used on the old style injectors. He felt this would apply to any hand pump today. Perhaps we have some other experienced fuel system techs out there who could confirm this thought. Since these injectors have been set on a Caterpillar Fuel Injection Test Bench, why try and invent the wheel???
Dan, at least you have the right color paint on your hand pump!! Bill Walter
