I searched around but have not seen a guide to torque levels for various bolts on the tractor. Big ones this weekend are for the bolts holding the engine to the bellhousing/transmission case. But I've got lots of other things to bolt on a list of torque values would be nice.

http://www.repairengineering.com/bolt-torque-chart.html. The question is what grade bolts are used. I know some CAT bolts are grade 8, maybe all of them, but I have also had some on a D311 clutch that popped off with only a whimper, so you may run across anything in an old machine (including those that have been overstressed in the past and are just ready to fail). Probably best that those kind go ahead and fail when you're reassembling. It's a pain when it happens, but better now than later.

Just an example, recently had our skid loader in the shop taking the wheels off to grease and check bearings and seal behind each one for wrapped string/wire/netwrap etc. One of our young guys was putting the 5/8" NF nuts back on with a 1" air impact wrench. I watched him do it and while I was there, he wasn't letting it sit and hammer on them, just tightening until they stopped and getting off them. Next day, one of the wheels fell off. 7 out of 8 studs had snapped off clean :jaw:
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

G'day. Scanned general torque values out of a manual from 1982 this chart appears in every manual at least from the 70,s through to 90's but use with care

Thanks to both of you. Yesterday's bolts were 1/2" diameter, I torqued them to 80 lbs., which agrees with both charts. Good info to have.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
