The centre of the clutch plate would be the same thickness as the teeth when new on a 5J,
I have a new one on the shelf if I remember I'll mesure the thickness tommorrow.
shovel man.
Let me clarify I am looking for the thinnest it can be and still be considered usable. The new plate thickness is also measureable at the teeth.
I do not want to replace it if I am still at - say - 50% good.
Thanks!
Well I measured the new clutch plate (4B3450) and it is .375 " thick (3/8 inch) I also have some used plates and my guess is
when they get down to .3 of an inch its time to replace it,
I also have some new clutch brake linnings for a D2 part # 4B3436 they measure .25 inch thickness.
shovel man.
I got a good measurement on the thickness of mine. It was 0.300 give or take a thou.
I decided that was too thin too, so I got a good used U model clutch plate, that was at 1/2" thick with really good teeth. I plan on taking it to a buddy with a lathe to true it up first.
Disk cost $100 but since it is thicker than a new J model, It should last another 70 years. 😆
Thanks shovel man!
Dan,
The U model clutch plate will not work in a J model due to its thickness, when you have it turned down, you might want to get it pretty close to the new thickness for a J. I measured .388 for a NOS J plate and .680 for the U.
OK thanks Josh.
Dan, I had the option of getting a new U-series from General Gear and turning it down but in the end for a few clams more I decided to just get the new J-series one from Cat. It's a two piece, meaning that it has a center component with the engaging teeth made out of a different material than that used for the friction. I want to say each sliver of friction is maybe an eighth of an inch thick, so that would be the absolute maximum it could wear.
Cheers,
Neil
Well, I bought a used U model disk and had it machined down. Turns out the core and friction surface are different materials. After turning down, all that is left is the structural part, made of some composite fiber like bakelite. Too bad as it had perfect teeth, which is why I selected it.
So, now I have to find another disk either new or for the J model that will work.
Cost me $100 for the used disk that is now unusable. General gear appears to have only one type of disk for all the D2 models. If I buy one, I will likely have to have it machined down. Is CAT the only other source for the J disk? I am afraid to ask what they want for it.
I ended up buying my J-series plate from Cat. It is also made of a core with friction glued to it. Cost about $200 and is about 4/10" thick. I welded the cracked 5B2519 (that's the plate that you tighten to adjust the clutch) and trued it and the other plate. Clutch is ready to go back together when I get my flywheel back from the machinist with the new ring gear fitted, which I got from General Gear.
Cheers,
Neil
