The exciter motor on my new/used gen set has four wires coming out of it. 2 are grounded to the big generator and the other two run down to this modern box (c pic). Were do the 2 wires that run out of the box go to excite the big generator? The only place I see is to attach them is to the main leads. But which 2?

Mike, I believe you were going to run this generator connected in the low voltage 3 phase Y connection as shown on the CAT tag. Each line out will be connected to 2 generator leads (1+7, 2+8, 3+9 with 4,5,6,0 for the neutral).

The usual plan for a reconnectable generator uses 7 & 8 for the regulator sensing, so when it's connected in series for high voltage, the 7 to 8 voltage is still the same ~208 volts it is when the windings are paralleled for low voltage.

The Basler regulator needs an AC voltage source to monitor ranging from 190 to 240 volts. So if you're running single phase off your generator, you'll be using two lines (1+7 and 2+8 for example). You want the regulator sensing the lines that have the load so the regulator is more responsive. So connect it to the same lines you are using for your single phase.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
