I purchased a Gallon of Rustoleum Old Caterpillar Yellow only to find that the color is so far off from the original yellow on the 22 I cannot use it. The yellow on my 22 is original .It even has "Caterpillar manufactured in Peoria,Ill on the back so I know it is the original paint . The original paint is a much lighter yellow than the Rustoleum stuff. Does anyone know of the true yellow for a 1934 Cat 22 and if so where I could get it ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you take into consideration that paint fades in the sun over the years?

I agree with GW on the fading issue.

I have considered the fading as a possibility and so machine polished an area and indeed some change but still nowhere close .

I'm with the crowd here. Polishing paint that has seen over 7 decades of UV rays probably won't bring back the original color. I have a NOS Caterpillar dash light for my D2 and the color is very close to the Rustoleum Old Cat Yellow, that light has not been in the sun for over 70 years.😛op2:

I have a toolbox off a friends Cat 22 so I machine polished it and the Rustoleum Old Cat yellow paint was a good match to that. So I will get custom mix for my existing Cat Yellow original paint as apparently it is somewhat unique . This was the color it was when my Grand Pa bought it new .

I painted my small 15 with paint that was mixed per the color code listed on this site. I was unsure but blamed it on the flouresent lights in my shop, When I got to the Show in Bowling green I was 10 shades lighter than any other Cat, what a bummer, Will be repainting this spring when I get the side curtans

Paint does fade and after all those years should be faded. You have to remember that Cat like a lot of other tractor manufactures was not worried on the color match as they were on the performance of their machines. They put the standards out and if they run short from a supplier . They may get it from another supplier and it may not match that well. As suggested find some paint under a gauge, fuel tank or behind something painted. See how it matches there.

I'm using Cat Part No. 4C4185 which I thought was the original "Hiway Safety Yellow" which is not the current Cat Yellow. My dealer has it in stock. I was lucky that 2 gallons came with my tractor when I bought it so cost was not a concern.

I used the Rustoleum to paint my Cat15 Motorpatrol and the color was great. It was easy to use and spray. If the two gallons that you said came with the tractor is what you are basing this all on,could it be that that is old paint, or didn,t Cat remove some of the lead in their paint that was used in CA.before changeing colors.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
