Was wondering if anyone would measure the recoil spring of their dozer or any other large springs you might have around. I need to find one that's 6" ID, approximately 1" coil about 2' long. I have the actual specs to have one made, but am looking for something cheap to replace the spring on our LaPlant-Choate C40 scraper. It's only function is to stop the front door slamming down hard. We've been running without it, so I can't justify spending a bunch of money having one made or purchasing one. I guess if the door falls apart tomorrow, I will say it's worth getting another, but it has operated like this for probably 20 or 30 years of occasional use. These are not pictures of our scraper, they were kindly sent to me by another CAT enthusiast

What about a couple of car coil springs?
Big Old Buicks and Chevy's
They could be trimmed to fit?

I have the old recoil spring from my 955h. It's longer than the 2 feet, I think the coils are 1 in dia, I'll have to measure the inside, but it has to be close to 6 in. Shipping would be an issue, it's heavy. probably 100 lbs

Thanks guys.

Called our go-to guy for heavy truck springs and he hasn't got anything that large of a diameter.I measured our D69U and the coils are 1.5" so the ID winds up too small to fit over the cylinder. I was hoping there would be enough difference in designs over the years that there would be a common spring I could use. I don't really think it has to be exactly anything, just has to fit over the cylinder and be approximately the correct length. I could even shim that or modify something if necessary.

D2 4U spring is only 3.5" inner diam, and about 20" long, but wire thickness is about 1".

Jim, those ejector cylinders with that spring setup are a real pain to remove. Done it twice, once on the one pictured and just recently on another I am rebuilding. Hopefully not again any time soon. Good luck finding something to fit.

Glum, You must be in a "nest" of these things! We got ours at a farm sale probably 40 years ago and have never seen another around here.

I wouldn't be worried about it, but my uncle wants to get one on there. I guess I'm in the tractor cab mostly so I don't hear it slamming shut every time. Got it out the other day to help the dozers push out a small storm water impoundment dam and that is the most dirt it's hauled in many years.

CC, went out and measured the springs in my lifted Ford F 150. they are 6 inch Dia. 1 inch dia wire 18 inches long
stock ones are about 12 inches long ( my Trucks lifted 6 inches) maybe stack two together.
Just a thought

Hey Farmboy, I need at least 5.75" ID on the spring since it has to slip over a 5.5" OD hydraulic cylinder. Did you mean 6" OD or ID?

Here's our scraper and a picture of the current project. About 6500 yards dam which will have a standpipe installed to drain all but the last 18" of water😞 Most of the dirt was pushed by the dozers, but did some of the longer distances with the scraper and tractor. Would love to have a tracked tractor to put on it just for fun, but the only thing I have with hydraulics is a D2-5J with the engine (and steering clutches probably) stuck.

Tractors are JD 4955, high horsepower D7E and mid 50's D6-9U.

Go to NAPA. Ask the guy to see the Moog spring catalog. You can look at it by the spring type. You will probably need square ends as opposed to pigtail ends or tapered ends. They are listed by wire diameter, as well as length, and load. That is how I found the $200 Scotchman ironworker spring for $48 delivered for a pair on Ebay. But, you will need that Moog number in order to shop around. If you have a Betts spring place close by, you could also call them and ask.

Do the hydraulics work at a reasonable speed behind the jd?
We had to make another arrangement to get them to work at a decent speed.
