Cat No 12 Motor Grader – serial number 71D437

Would like to know:

Engine oil capacity?

Cooling system capacity?

Year built?

When changing engine oil... is there anything else I need to do other than drain the engine block and replace filters?

Any other lubrication tips would be greatly appreciated.

Just replaced radiator and oil cooler and am anxious to get this puppy back on the road.

Thanks from Hawaii...

That's a 1958 model.

Capacities

Fuel......60 Gal
Crankcase.....6-1/2 Gal
Transmission....14-1/2 Gal
Tandem drive housing each....6 Gal
Cooling Sys.....14-1/2 Gal [Another manual says 13-3/4 gal for the DE start].

Can't remember if there is anything special about draining the oil clutch compartment. Need feedback from someone that knows.

There is plug in the clutch compartment on the right side underneath the compartment. Also add about 1/2 gal of oil for the clutch. This is not shown or mentioned in the book.

Thanks to all of you for the information.
What kind of oil is best for the tandems?

OK, thanks, I kinda thought so.
The capacities are right out of the 71D Parts Book so the oil clutch should be included.

The clutch oil capacity is NOT included as you would think. Also recommend bleeding air from oil cooler after filling and start up. Capacity is for engine only. Also, typically use 80/90w oil in tandems and transmission.

So I am draining the oil at the plug you mention in the clutch compartment and then am I adding 1/2 gal oil back into the clutch compartment or adding an additional 1/2 gal into the crankcase?

Thanks for your help.

Add to the crankcase, it will wind up in the clutch housing.

Hello
My father has a 1948 #12 motor grader, and as the mechanic and computer savy person in the family he comes to me when there is an issue with any of his equipment. His grader had an issue last year with the clutch not diengaging fast enough (a little grinding with any shifting), and he neglected to ask me to look at it, but after sitting for 8 months it now acts like the pressure plate is stuck to the flywheel, and I wondered if it was rusted in place, or possibly low on oil, or both. I examined the mechanical links and all seem to operate as expected, but do not at this point have a firm grasp/understanding of the shifter shafts and any oil pressure or level effects this might have on the situation. I have not worked on this pice of equipment before and was searching for any info on oil level checks when I found this discussion. Any info or guidance would be greatly apreciated.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
