seems expensive for the USA, but then again the D2's are cheaper there than here, so the overall cost is lower I guess.

A winch to suit a D2 in Aus would be 1. very hard to find and 2. very expensive - some say over 2500Au dollars. But so far I have not seen any for sale that are worth buying.

I have an Aussie-build one on my D2 that fits real good though😊

I'd say $1,200 to $1.500 is more in line unless it's been completely rebuilt.
That also has to include all the controls and mounting brackets.

Not sure if this is apples to apples, but I sold the PCU off my D4 winch three years or so ago for $400 pick up at my place. Fellow was restoring a military D42T with cable unit and needed it to complete his machine to make it functional. May have been able to get more, but who knows. He was from Pennsylvania-never did send me any pics.

I'll reinstall my winch at some point-still need the top-cover where the PCU rested.

D4 winch in Aus will cost up to 2 grand, eg., a D4D Hyster. A D2 winch in good nick is likely to cost more as there are fewer of them and the main reason for fitting them appears to be for better machine balance and appearance rather than for dragging stuff.

Interestingly, the D4 7U machines I've seen that have had winches fitted have nearly all had cracked rear transmission cases. One of my wrecks also has a severe twist to the internal PTO spline/shaft. This is clear evidence of severe abuse.

Does a D2 winch require a PTO to operate?

yes, it needs a power source from the gear box.

Not a "PTO" in the sense of a rear mounted one, but it needs the shaft that comes out of the winch that goes up inside the transmission/final drive case to connect into the transmission drive shaft.

The Hyster D2 and D2N do not need a seperate PTO, they have a shaft that couples with the lower (counter) shaft in the transmisssion. I picked up a D2N about 4 years ago for $1500 USD.

Here is the parts and instruction book for a D2N Winch.
It might help answer any questions you may have.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
