I went with my father to pick up an old Rock Island 2 hp engine he had purchased and the older gentleman started showing us some neat old iron. I saw this neat old crawler in the corner of his building and asked about it. He stated that it was purchased by a guy near him new to rip some low land ground for drainage, then used for an auger. It was supposedly not used much and then kept inside. He bought it for $600 a long time ago, he thought about 40 years, and used it three times as he had another crawler with a blade on it. One of the times he used it was to pull the other crawler out of a creek. Being stupid, I asked it if was available and he said that as he will never be able to use it due to his age and health, it was for sale. He thought that after he passed it would be sold for iron. He said that he had the manuals and dealer parts books for it and that it should fire up to pull on the trailer. He priced it at 1000 and I bought it. I believe that is original paint, but who knows. All original decals on it I think, even a Caterpillar Diesel. I have not picked it up, and do not know much about it except it a D2, a 1952 model (5U9476), not stuck either is the pony motor, has pto and no idea on the front thing. What a fun day and an enjoyable time visiting with a talented old farmer. The father father son bonding was great too as I even brought my 5 year old boy along. He really wanted to buy the CADDAPILLOW. What can be told from these pictures? Any comments appreciated. I have no idea on the undercarriage or how to check. In Nebraska. Any experts here.

Looks to be in good shape. The grouser bars on the tracks don't look to be warn down. The thing on the front is a hydralic pump unit, I'm guessing a #40 as it does not look like the #44 that is on mine. Good find there.

I've got two of these and I'm in Eastern SD. Let me know if you need help or just want to chat about them. Great pads on that one!

Looks like it's in great shape and complete. Hopefully the Steering Clutches are not stuck from sitting for so long.

Good Luck!👍👍👍

Yes,
I hope not. I have no idea how to check the undercarriage, but supposedly he does. He stated that the D2 he used often was at about 50%, but that this one was "like new" He said it was never used and that he didn't use it because it does not have a blade on it and his other one does. He was not trying to sell the crawler to me and he could kinda care less so I don't think he was just trying to sell it. He was really just happy to have someone get it running and use it. He was very concerned that a lot of his stuff would just go to scrap iron as he didn't seem to have family. I do not know how old he was, but he had a lot of trouble getting around. Too bad. A lot of knowledge going to waste.

I cannot believe how everybody else just "stumbles" on to these deals! Good find. Good luck.

My wife befriended an elderly gentleman at an auction the other day and I spent the next 3 evenings helping him start and break loose the steering clutches on an HT4 that he had bought to pile cedar trees on his farm. Fortunately everything was pretty simple so I impressed the old guy pretty good. I told him when he was done with it to give me a chance to buy it. We'll see.

I bet there is more old iron setting in barns than you think. You never know what might happen when you strike up a conversation with the guy standing next to you. Meanwhile I'll keep waiting for my ship to come in. Problem is I will probably be at the bus stop!

Start saving Quarters......Whenever I drag home a new toy I stop at a coin op car wash and give it a good bath (sometimes I'll spray it with degreaser after it's loaded). Sure makes working on it easier (and more pleasant) if it's clean. You might be surprised how it'll look once it's clean. 👍👍

I do have a pressure washer of my own but the coin op ones seem to be a little less hassle (no hoses to get out and put away).

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
