i have noticed most of the older tractors have a tool box attched to the fender. is this a factory item and did Caterpillar supply some tools with the tractor? i have some wrenchs and a large hammer that my dad saved from his D4 and i"m not sure if they were factory or some after market tool he carried. any infomation is appreciated.

Sawatzky1,
Yes, on the tool box, and there were a set of tools with each new tractor years ago as well as a set of manuals. The tools came in large wood box strapped to the deck along with a track roller grease gun for the rolls. I don’t recall when, but later the tools boxes had a small compartment under the lid for the manuals. here is list of tools that came with the early 14-A’s

Here's some pics of a NOS Caterpillar D4 tool kit I added to my collection a while ago. Most of the tools Cat used were provided by other established tool makers, the double end wrenches are almost always Billings with the Caterpillar part number stamped on them, some of the other odd wrenches are Armstrong and Vlchek also carrying Cat numbers, the grease guns were either Lincoln or Alemite, the track grease pumps were Alemite, and some of the special parts like the fuel injection caps and the feeler gauge in this set actually just have Caterpillar on them.

5B787 wrench made by Billings

Lincoln grease gun, but the tag on the packaging shows the Cat part number and states that the product inside meets all Caterpillar specifications.

Toby,

In the first photo there are two sort of "T" shaped tools in the upper right hand of the pic with what looks like pins laying next to 'em. My question is what were they used for? They look more like hood latches than anything else.

The T shaped pieces are stops for the swinging drawbar
