Finally got my Ten running, and the oil in the tranny and final drives is like tar. Going to clean it with Kerosene, but the book says that the final drives and transmission both use transmission oil. Is this correct? I'm taking it to a local show this weekend so I want new oil in it. I'm thinking the final drives take gear oil not tranny oil but i could be wrong.

Hi, I am sure there are some opinions that will be differ from mine but if I did not see any water or contaminates in it I would leave it alone. I removed some of that 400-600 weight tar out of a tractor to put nice clean oil in it and I ended up with noise that was not there before. Just my 2 cents😊 Larry

a new 90w oil is much too thin and will cause leakage aswell, so look for the 300 w oil.

Back in the Spring/Early Summer there was a Thread on the "GL" grades of Gear Oil, seems that if you do want to put in modern lubricant. Then you need to find the lower "GL" type with less phosphorus(?) as this will pit Bronze bushings.

I use "Sta-Lube multi-purpose SAE 140 Hyoid Gear Oil API/GL4". It is not corrosive to copper, bronze or other non-ferrous alloy bearings and bushing. Bill

You put that in both tranny and final drive?

Yes, the transmission and final drives use the same type oil.

OK thanks again. I uploaded a picture, hopefully it worked. I have fixed the seat since the picture.

Nice looking Ten, and I,m not just saying that cuz its in Michigan.

I agree on the Lube, its very hard to keep modern 90W in the final drives but like you i find the old lube (if you can call it that) like tar, I typically add some old gas, drive it around for a while before I drain it just so it will flow out.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
