Does anyone have the firing order for a Cat 28? We pulled the plugs to lube the cylinders but the wires got mixed up.
Thanks,
Rob

Thank, I tired to search through before I asked but couldn't find anything. The 28 belongs to an older friend who also has a D4 with pony motor issues so we hope to start the 28 and use it to pull off the D4.
Thanks,
Rob

Wow, Thanks, I looked and looked but couldn't find an online manual. Now all I have to do is figure out how to access it. I'm only 57 so I'm not as savvy at computers as you old guys or as up on the old cats.
Many Thanks,

If it is not 1-3-4-2, then it is 1-3-2-4.
I need to post some photo's later today and will check back on this after I look it up.

From the Caterpillar Gas Tractor Restoration and Interchange Manual: "With the exception of the 2- Ton, all of the gas Caterpillar tractors have a firing order of 1-3-4-2."

I realized yesterday after posting that there is the remote possiblity of the overhead valve being different.
I checked my GAS 35 manual and sure enough it is 1-3-4-2 like I posted originally.
👍
Also it is listing number one as lower left, number 3 on upper left, number 4 on upper right and number 2 on lower right. (if memory serves me right)

All inline 4 cylinder engines have one of two firing orders. The Cats and IHC's and some others are 1-3-4-2. The Ford Model T, A, Fordson tractors, and N series and a few others are 1-2-4-3. It makes sense if you look at it as the reverse of each other. Move the number one to the last digit and read the order backward and the engine will still run in balance. The main difference is in the way the cam is cut. If an inline 4 has has gears to turn the cam the timing will be one way, say the cam is ground to a 1-3-4-2 order. Take away the gears and put a timing chain and cog set and now the cam will run in the same direction as the crank rather than the opposite direction. Now the firing order will be 1-2-4-3. Think about it and it will come to you. Dandy Dave!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
